Alan H. Ryder Obituary
Alan H. Ryder 81, passed away peacefully on Saturday January 25, 2025 at the HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence with family by his side. He was the beloved husband of 47 years to the late Nancy (Sheils) Ryder. Born to the late John and Sarah Ryder on April 12, 1943 in Warwick, Alan was a resident of Cranston for more than 50 years before moving to an assisted living facility this summer.
Alan worked for 32 years for the Office of the Auditor General, retiring in 2006 as a Senior Audit Manager. He attained degrees from both the University of Rhode Island and Bryant College, later becoming a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Fraud Examiner. He was an original member of the Office of the Auditor General when it was established in 1974, playing a major role in both its formation and development. Alan also was an active member in numerous professional organizations, including the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, Rhode Island Chapter 33, having served as its President from 1997-98. He received the CFE Excellence Award in 2004.
Alan honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After that, he began his career with the Defense Contract Audit Agency, which is the auditing arm of the United States Department of Defense.
Throughout his life, Alan was a devout Roman Catholic who often volunteered his time at his church. He volunteered on numerous boards and helped with fundraisers and would often be found at various functions, like an annual St. Patrick’s Day Dinner and at the annual holiday bazar. Alan and his late wife Nancy also were volunteers for Catholic Charities each year.
Alan was a devoted fan of the Providence College Friars men’s basketball team, including being a season-ticket holder for nearly 35 years, sitting in section 119. He also cheered on the New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox and Boston Celtics. Alan also was an avid reader and a listener of a variety of music and genres, from Billy Joel to the Grateful Dead to the Beatles and Beach Boys. You could often find him attending concerts at the former Warwick Musical Theater as well as numerous venues around New England.
Alan is survived by his son Kevin and wife Jennifer of North Attleborough, son Sean of East Greenwich and daughter Jennifer of Cranston. He was the brother of the late Paul Ryder and brother-in-law to Sheila of Stoneham, MA. He was a brother-in-law to Kathleen Kelley of Smithfield; Joan Goddard of Warwick; Mary Conte of Smithfield; and Laura Lizotte of Glocester and her late husband Brian Lizotte; and the late Edward Sheils of Colorado.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4:00-7:00pm in The Butterfield Chapel 500 Pontiac Avenue Cranston.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday January 31, 2025 at 10:00am in St. Mark Church 9 Garden Court Cranston.
Burial will follow in St. Ann Cemetery Cranston.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the veteran organization Homes for Our Troops (www.hfotusa.org) in Alan’s name.
