James A. Schaefer Obituary

James A. Schaefer
December 9, 1943 – April 19, 2025

James A. Schaefer, beloved father, grandfather, and lifelong educator, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2025, at the age of 81.

Born to Orien and Reval Schaefer in New Martinsville, West Virginia, Jim’s passion for learning began early and guided the course of his life. He earned his undergraduate degree from Marietta College and went on to complete his graduate studies in Mathematics at the University of Illinois, Urbana. His love of numbers and desire to share knowledge found a natural home in the classroom, where he inspired generations of students as a professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Rhode Island College.

Jim’s curiosity extended far beyond the walls of academia. He was an avid gardener, an explorer at heart, and a lifelong student of the world around him. He found beauty in the details and joy in the simple things — a freshly turned garden bed enriched with his own compost, a well-worn trail, or a thoughtful conversation. Though reserved by nature, Jim was never afraid to speak up when something wasn’t right. His integrity, kindness, and willingness to stand up for what he believed in left a lasting impact on all who knew him.

He is survived by his former wife, Diane Schaefer; son, Andrew (Jacki) Schaefer; daughter, Emily (Jeff) Schaefer Doyle; brother, Anthony (Jan) Schaefer and four grandchildren (Douglas, Josephine, Ryan and Dylan). Jim’s gentle wisdom, thoughtful demeanor, and generous spirit will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.

A graveside memorial celebrating Jim’s life will be held on May 31, 2025 at 11:00am in Swan Point Cemetery followed by a reception. In keeping with Jim’s philanthropic spirit, donations may be made in his memory to the New Martinsville Public Library http://givebutter.com/JamesSchaefer or an educational or environmental organization close to your heart.
