Marie Walsh Obituary

Marie N. (DeMizio) Walsh 78, of Stuart, Florida passed away Saturday May 15, 2021 at her second home in Exeter, RI.  She was an elementary school teacher for 34 years before retiring from the Cranston School Department in 1999. Marie was a loving wife for the past 21 years to John A. “Jack” Walsh.  Born in Providence, Marie was the daughter of the late Ralph and Etta (Cardullo) DeMizio.   She lived in Providence until moving to Cranston in the 1980’s.   In 2000, she and Jack made their home in Florida, but continued spending the summer months in their home state among family and life-long friends. Besides her husband Jack, she is survived by her stepdaughters, Kathleen Lamothe and her husband Steven, Kristen Corey and her husband Thomas R., and five grandchildren, Daniel Lamothe, Andrew Lamothe, Ryan Lamothe, Kelly Corey, and Thomas M. Corey.  As an only child, Marie grew up with very close relationships with her cousins on both the Cardullo and DeMizio sides of her family, many of whom were like siblings to her. To Marie, teaching elementary school was more than a job, it was her passion!  She loved her job and her students.  Some of her fondest memories were from the classroom or the many plays and field trips that she helped organize for the kids.  Her career began at the former Gilbert Stuart Elementary School in Providence.  She then taught at the former Meshanticut Park Elementary School followed by Glen Hills Elementary School, both in Cranston, RI.  Even years after retiring from teaching in 1999, she would frequently run into former students who would remember her fondly as one of their favorite teachers.  Marie loved to travel, having been on many cruises and trips to Europe, including Italy, multiple times.  She was a fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots.  Marie loved spending time with her many friends and family members and had many cultural interests, but her ultimate pastime was her second passion in life:  SHOPPING!  Marie was a 1961 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School in Providence.  After earning her bachelor’s degree from Rhode Island College in 1965 she continued at RIC earning a master’s degree in Elementary Education. Marie was a faithful Christian and a longtime member of Church of the Master in Providence, where she was a deacon, choir member, and served on several committees.  After moving to Florida, she became a member of Stuart Congregational Church where she was a deacon and choir member.  Most recently she attended Wakefield Baptist Church in RI. Marie’s husband wishes to say a special “Thank You” to South County Home Health and the Exeter Fire District EMS Division.
