Obituary

Published on behalf of A. Tarro and Sons Funeral Home Providence, Rhode Island who will be directing the funeral for Mrs. Mary Schlageter from The Butterfield Home and Chapel funeral home located at 500 Pontiac Avenue Cranston.

Mary A. Schlageter (Carlone) 92, of Cranston was welcomed into the kingdom of Heaven on March 4, 2023 answering God’s call only after living a life that was full, vigorous, and restricted only by time. Mary was born on February 2, 1931 in Barrington, Rhode Island, the last surviving child of the late Pietro and Margherita (DeBalsi) Carlone. She was the beloved wife of the late William J. Schlageter, Sr. (PPD). She was sister to Rose Fafara, Etta Assante, and Pasquale, William and Peter Carlone.

Mary glowed with pride: a doting mother, Nonnie, and aunt, and a devoted woman of faith. She worked for the State of Rhode Island for many years, and spent her retirement focusing on family, friends, and the church. To keep her heart young, Mary filled her days with people and activities that she loved. She prayed the rosary daily and was a cornerstone in her community parish, serving as a eucharistic minister and founding a bereavement support group. Mary was an avid knitter, giving much of her free time to building prayer blankets and shawls for the sick. On any given day, Mary could be found sporting leopard print while bowling a perfect game, enjoying dinner with friends, cheering on her favorite horses, playing the slots at Twin River, or finishing the daily crossword in record time. Mary loved to cook for those she loved and spent hours in the kitchen creating her famous meatballs, sauce, and egg biscuits. Her recipes will live on to grace the tables and fill the bellies of those who loved her.

Mary is survived by her children, Margaret “Meg” Schlageter and her partner Brenda Provost, and William J. Schlageter, Jr. and his wife Jacqueline Champagne; her grandchildren, Alyssa Champagne and Alexander Schlageter (Christina); a great-grandson, Finnegan Schlageter; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She will be profoundly remembered by all who knew her.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 5:00-7:00pm in The Butterfield Chapel. Funeral Service will begin at 8:45am from The Butterfield Chapel 500 Pontiac Avenue Cranston followed by A Mass of Christian Burial in the Immaculate Conception Church 237 Garden Hills Drive Cranston, RI 02920 at 10:00am.  Burial will follow in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery Exeter.  In lieu of flowers donations to Immaculate Conception Church would be appreciated.

Arrangements in the care of A. Tarro and Sons Funeral Home.
