Paul Monahan of Cranston, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. Paul was the beloved husband of Claire (England) Monahan, with whom he shared fifty-five years of marriage. Born on November 6, 1947 in Providence, he was the son of the late Arthur and Rita (Brown) Monahan.
Paul proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. His courage and dedication in the line of duty earned him the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in combat along with the respect and admiration of his fellow soldiers. He continued to embody the values of honor, courage, and service throughout his life later serving as the Commander of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). After his discharge from the Marines, Paul worked for twenty-five years with New England Telephone/NYNEX. Additionally, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Roger Williams University. Paul was also known for his love of golf and, in true military fashion, was often the first to tee off at the Cranston Country Club for many years. For forty-three years, Paul found solace and purpose as a dedicated member of Alcoholics Anonymous. He was a proud friend of Bill W., and his “military-style approach” to sobriety helped countless people over the years.
Paul was preceded in death by his daughter Jennifer Monahan and in addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Melissa Monahan of North Kingstown and Daniel Monahan and wife Marisa of Warwick. He was the proud grandfather to Bridget Fenscak and husband Ian, Mia Parkerson, Sheamus and Mary Monahan. He was the brother of the late Peter Monahan formerly of Cranston and Matthew Monahan formerly of Milford, Connecticut.
Paul's life will be celebrated with a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday September 20, 2024 at 10:00am in St. Matthew's Church 1299 Elmwood Avenue Cranston. Burial with Military Honors will follow in The Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery 301 South County Trail Exeter. The family invites all who knew Paul to join them in honoring his memory. In lieu of flowers, donations in Paul’s honor to the Disabled American Veterans Attention: Michael Zibrida 380 Westminster Street Providence, RI 02903 would be greatly appreciated.
Paul will be remembered for his virtues of friendship, love, and loyalty. His legacy of service, both to his country and to his fellow man, will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. "May you rest in peace Paul, until we meet again."
