Sophia Brown Obituary

Sophia Stephania Opiekun Brown, 93, a lifelong resident of Rhode Island, died peacefully surrounded by her family after a very brief illness on Wednesday September 11, 2019. Sophia, who was known to all as "Sue," worked at the Biltmore Hotel as a banquet waitress for many years. Sue was married for 41 years to the late Edwin G. Brown. She was born on January 11, 1926 in Providence. Both of Sue's parents were originally from Poland-the late John Opiekun and his wife, Wanda Radiszewszka Opiekun. Sue leaves behind her children, Kathleen Cinq-Mars and her husband, Leonard, of Rehoboth, MA, Sheila Nathanson and her husband, Dr. Michael Nathanson of Pittsburgh, PA, Kenneth Brown and his wife, Jeanne of Cranston, RI, Beverly Brown and her partner, Kenneth Edge of Foster, RI, and Susan Judith LaCascio and her husband, Kevin of Warwick, RI. She was also the mother of the late John Brown. She had seven grandchildren: Amy, Kenneth, Jacob, Matthew, Danielle, Evan, and Ben and three great grandchildren: Daniel, Molly and Olivia. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews. Sue lived her life as a devout Catholic, who attended Mass daily. Sue loved cooking, gardening and being surrounded by her family, especially the little ones. She touched so many lives with her kindness and generosity, with never a harsh word to anyone. She never complained or expected any thanks. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her. A Celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday September 17th, beginning at 8:45am from The Butterfield Chapel, 500 Pontiac Avenue, Cranston followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Paul's Church Cranston, at 10:00am. Burial will be in the Rhode Island Veteran's Cemetery, Exeter. Yatcha Kohum, Mom.
