Stephen J. "Snake" Day Obituary
Stephen J. “Snake” Day 76, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on May 27, 2025. He shared his life for 42 years with his wife Melissa (Mennillo) Day. He was the son of James and the late Juanita (MacDonald) Day.
He was a Vietnam Veteran who served with the United States Army. He later went on to fulfill his childhood dream of being a firefighter he proudly served on the Providence Fire Department for 34 years as member of various engine and ladder companies. Later in his career he became the handler of the first ATF Arson Detection canine for the department. Along with the Providence Fire Department, he and Sparky also assisted The State Fire Marshal’s Office and many cities and towns across the state with their incident investigations. In his spare time, he put his artistic talents to use, drawing, model building and painting shields for his fellow firefighters. But he most loved hanging out in his garage painting and fixing his friend’s motorcycles or tinkering with their cars.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughters Holly Day Maxwell and Vikki Wood, son-in-law Sam Maxwell, grandchildren Olivia, Joseph and Logan. He is also survived by his sisters Shelly Maher and Bernadette Porter.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Operation Stand Down (OSDRI) or The Rhode Island Fire Chief’s Honor Flights.
Visitation will be on Thursday June 5, 2025 from 4:00-7:00pm in The Butterfield Chapel 500 Pontiac Avenue Cranston.
A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday June 5, 2025 at 7:00pm in The Butterfield Chapel immediately following the visitation.
Burial will be private.
