Stephen P. Rachels 69, passed away peacefully on Friday January 23, 2026. A devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and loyal brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, Stephen’s life was defined by hard work, service, and deep love for his family.
Stephen was the beloved husband of Donna (Crosby) Rachels and the son of the late James D. and Bergernetta (Burgess) Rachels. He was a devoted father to Tara (Tim), James (Emily), and Steven, and a proud grandfather to his grandchildren—Angelo Rachels, Oliver Logan, and Lincoln and Rose Rachels—who brought him immense joy. He was also a cherished brother to Madeline (Burns), Carol (Silverman), and Jeana (Marsella).
Stephen spent most of his life living between Cranston, Exeter, and Block Island, three places that shaped who he was and where many of his strongest memories were made. He worked in the HVAC field for most of his career, known not only for his skill, reliability, and strong work ethic, but also for being a great mentor who was always willing to teach, guide, and support others. In addition to his professional work, Stephen proudly served as Lieutenant with the Block Island Volunteer Fire Department, reflecting his lifelong commitment to helping others and serving his community.
Stephen believed deeply in family—both the one he was born into and the one he built along the way. He had way of making everyone feel like family, welcoming people with warmth, loyalty, and genuine care – respectfully earning him the nickname “Papa Steve”. He also had a deep love for animals and found constant companionship in his best friend and loyal dog, Jax, who was rarely far from his side. Those who knew him will remember him as steady, dependable, and deeply caring—a man who showed his love through presence, action, humor, and quiet strength.
Stephen will be deeply missed and forever loved.
Visitation will be held on Friday January 30, 2026 from 2:00-7:00pm in The Butterfield Chapel 500 Pontiac Avenue Cranston. There will be a time for shared remarks and thoughts from 6:00-7:00pm.
A Celebration of his Life will be held in the spring, around Stephen's birthday March 22, 2026 on Block Island. Details will be announced later this winter.
