Sylvia Rose Brown of the West Shore Health Center died peacefully at the age of 99 at Hope Health Hospice Center early Wednesday morning, May 4th. She was cared for by her loving children: Paul and wife Donna of Wakefield; Rae Ann Lannon and the late Michael Lannon of North Kingston; Carl and wife Ann of Cranston, Jon and wife Michele of West Warwick, and the late Roy, until her final moments.
Sylvia was the devoted wife of the late Chester Brown, whom she held dear all of her life after his passing in 1976. She was born in Cumberland, RI on June 11, 1922, passing just five weeks before her 100th birthday. The daughter of Harold and Rose (Shepherd) Leech, she moved to Warwick after marriage and then to Coventry in 1978. Sylvia was the sister of the late Norman Leech and his wife Norma of Cumberland. She is survived by her children, eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Sylvia loved beach days and never missed a family gathering. Even the simplest times together were a celebration to her, exemplifying a spirit of joyfulness and dedication that her family carries on today. Her legacy will be shaped by memories of stuffing 20 people into her living room for holidays, epic Easter egg hunts in her Coventry back yard, daily walks to the post office, and the best tuna fish sandwiches in town. Later in her life she enjoyed taking trips with the Coventry Resource and Senior Center. She remained active and independent into her 90’s, cracking jokes every step of the way—a testament to her determined, self-sufficient, kind, and gentle nature. Walk on, Syl.
Sylvia’s life will be celebrated at The Butterfield Home and Chapel 500 Pontiac Avenue Cranston on Monday May 9th, 2022 at 11:00am. A Visiting Hour will be held for one hour prior to the Service beginning at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to Hope Health Hospice 1085 North Main St. Providence, RI 02904.
