Walter Berger Jr. Obituary

Walter Allison Berger Jr. 79 passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on the morning of June 4, 2025 at Hope Hospice. He was the loving husband of Mary J. (Gautieri) DiPaolo and the beloved son of the late W. Allison and Mary (Speight) Berger.

As a proud graduate of Cranston West class of 1964, Walter was a social case worker for the Department of Human Services for 28 years. He received his Master of Social Work degree from the University of Connecticut in 1975. He loved playing and watching all sports including playing golf. Walter also enjoyed pop music daily from the 60’s to the 90’s. As an only child he was a loyal, loving son and caregiver to his widowed mother for 20 years. He will be missed by friends both old and new. 

Walter was the loving father to sons Paul (Rose) and Scott (Sherrie) Berger and daughter Christine (Michael) Flint as well as a devoted Papa to eight wonderful grandchildren: Chelsea, Alex, Evan, Dylan, Ty, Allison, Ashley, and Christian. He also leaves nephews Fred and Steven Gautieri who took care of Walter and Aunt Mary, helping them with their daily needs and offering constant support. He was the stepfather of the late John and David DiPaolo.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday June 10, 2025 at 10:30am in The Butterfield Chapel 500 Pontiac Avenue Cranston. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service beginning at 9:30am. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Park Johnston. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Hope Hospice and Palliative Care 1085 North Main Street Providence, RI 02904.
